Preparation for Fall road travel

As fall approaches, it’s important to prepare for changing road conditions that can impact your safety. The season brings cooler temperatures, shorter days, and a variety of weather conditions that can create hazardous driving situations.

1. Check Your Tires: Ensure your tires have adequate tread and are properly inflated. Wet leaves, frost, and early snow can make roads slippery, so good tire traction is essential.

2. Inspect Your Lights: With shorter daylight hours, you’ll likely be driving more in low-light conditions. Make sure your headlights, taillights, and turn signals are clean and fully operational to improve visibility.

3. Windshield Wipers and Washer Fluid: Fall often brings rain and fog, so it’s important to have effective windshield wipers and plenty of washer fluid. Replace wipers if they leave streaks or show signs of wear.

4. Be Cautious of Wet Leaves: Wet leaves can be as slick as ice, particularly on curves and in shaded areas. Reduce your speed and avoid sudden braking when driving through areas covered in leaves.

5. Watch for Wildlife: Deer and other animals are more active in the fall, especially during dawn and dusk. Stay alert and reduce speed in areas where wildlife crossings are common.

6. Prepare an Emergency Kit: As the weather becomes unpredictable, keep an emergency kit in your vehicle. Include items like a blanket, flashlight, jumper cables, and a first-aid kit.

By taking these precautions, you can navigate fall’s unique driving challenges and ensure a safer journey.
