The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration issued an electronic logging device (ELD) rule intended to foster safer work environments for commercial motor vehicle drivers by making it faster and easier to accurately track and share records of duty status data. An ELD synchronizes with a vehicle’s engine to automatically record driving time, thus eliminating the need for paper logs and AOBRDs (automatic onboard recording devices). The new rule includes technical specifications that all ELD manufacturers must comply with, an implementation timeline spanning four years, and provisions to prevent data tampering and driver harassment. This rule will standardize data sharing with safety officials making demonstrated compliance far easier.
