OSHA issues ruling calling for employers to electronically submit injury and illness beginning January 1, 2017. In an effort to encourage better workplace safety practices, OSHA is mandating that employers in high-hazard industries send in injury information they already collect for publication on the OSHA website. This public disclosure of work injury history is intended to incite workplace injury prevention and also allow potential employees the option to review data prior to accepting a job, thus allowing them to make fully informed decisions. The ruling also includes a clause promoting a worker’s right to report injury without fear of retaliation and preventing employers from discouraging injury or illness reporting. This modernization of injury data will result in the establishment of the largest publically available data set on work injury and illness. OSHA will scrub data of all personally identifiable information prior to posting.
